According to the Better Hearing Institute, more than 34 million Americans suffer from hearing loss and roughly 60% of them are in the workforce.
Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to increased worker absenteeism and reduced workplace productivity. Workplace Wellness and Hearing Loss
Today, more than half (53%) of U.S. employers use wellness programs to reduce healthcare costs. By including hearing health in wellness programs, employers can encourage workers to treat hearing loss rather than hide it. A national BHI study found that people with untreated hearing loss lose as much as $ 30,000 in income annually, depending on their degree of impairment. The aggregate yearly loss in income due to underemployment for people with untreated hearing loss is an estimated $ 176 billion, and the fiscal cost to society in unrealized federal taxes is an estimated $ 26 billion. Use of hearing aids was shown to reduce the risk of income loss by 90-100% for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 -77 % for those with moderate to severe hearing loss.
Dr. Sergei Kochkin, Executive Director of the Better Hearing Institute says he cannot emphasize strongly enough that, “When hearing loss is appropriately acknowledged and addressed, it does not have to interfere with job performance, earnings, or quality of life.” Dr. Kochkin urges all employers to make hearing health part of their wellness programs.
Improved Quality of Life and Work
According to BHI, three out of four hearing aid users report improvements in their quality of life when fit with hearing aids. Studies show that people with even mild hearing loss who use hearing aids have improved job performance, increased earning potential, enhanced communication skills, improved professional and interpersonal relationships, and less depression.

The Multifamily Excellence Award is bestowed upon projects identified as providing special needs, including senior housing and housing for the homeless with supportive services. Award winners are recognized as models for the community and deemed financially viable for both tenants and developers, while exemplifying exceptional design.
Built on the campus of The Academy of Mount St. Ursula in the Bronx, Serviam Towers is a new construction connected to a former convent on the site that was renovated and converted to provide apartments and social spaces for residents. The whole development provides 243 units of housing to low and moderate income seniors, with on-site amenities such as a media room, yoga/tai chi room, gym, game room, a 54-seat theater, lounges, and both indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.
Serviam Towers is the first City-subsidized affordable housing development completed using the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria (EGCC), bringing together a sustainability agenda that reaches beyond the building to the community that comprises it. Included in the project are landscaped grounds with productive garden beds for residents? plantings, as well as an 8,000 square foot green roof outfitted with a rainwater harvesting system. These features were recently recogized by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) NY Chapter with an Honor Award in Collaborative Design.
In addition to the green roofs, other green features throughout the development include a high performance building envelope with Energy Star appliances and light fixtures, high efficiency boiler and heating and cooling system, and non-toxic, renewable and recycled interior finishes. Through a partnership between The Lincoln Leadership Institute at Gettysburg founder and president Steven B. Wiley and the Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School, 30 ninth grade students will receive a complimentary leadership development experience offered by Wiley and the faculty of The Lincoln Leadership Institute at Gettysburg on May 10 and 11. The experience will relate lessons learned from the Battle of Gettysburg to the daily challenges the students face in their school community.

CommonWealth One Held Community Shred Days on April 28th in Alexandria and Harrisonburg, VA

CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union?s annual Community Shred Day was held on Saturday, April 28th for its members and the community at its Alexandria and Harrisonburg, Virginia branches. Members and the community were encouraged to shred their sensitive personal documents such as monthly bill statements, paycheck stubs, and junk mail for free.
In Alexandria, Safeguard Shredding was on-site to securely shred materials while participants waited. 9,600 pounds of documents were shredded. In addition to the free shredding, attendees enjoyed free light refreshments, plus games and fun activities that highlighted the end of the National Credit Union Youth Week. One lucky member won four free tickets to a Washington Nationals baseball game.
More than twenty T.C. Williams High School Academy of Finance (?AOF?) students volunteered at the event as well as sold drinks to raise money for their program. Two students dressed up as superheroes to promote National Credit Union Youth Week during the event and painted children?s faces. The AOF program promotes financial literacy among students by preparing and exposing them to the world of business. CommonWealth One helps them achieve this goal by giving these students the opportunity and the experience of working for a financial institution and other special projects.
H&R Contractors shredded a total of 1,749 pounds of documents at the Harrisonburg Regional Branch, which was an increase of 944 pounds over last year. Attendees also enjoyed free light refreshments as well as National Credit Union Youth Week games and activities. Staff wore Super Saver t-shirts to promote saving, plus a super hero was on hand to play games and entertain children. A free hot air balloon ride was raffled to the attendees.
